Engaging the User: Involve, Fascinate, Inspire Users

What role do usability and UX play when attempting to involve, fascinate and inspire users? Targeting this central question, we are looking forward to your contributions in workshops, teasers, and talks at the WUD 2014.

Involve

User Engagement

What can we learn from users? What is the advantage of engaging users continuously in the development process of products and services? How can human-centred design principles be applied successfully, even if projects are small or budgets are tight?

Fascinate

Engaging Products & Services

How can products and services be designed, so users do not want to do without them? What fascinates users about products, apps, and services, so they really like to use these in their daily routine? What aspects of the usage successfully evoke users’ emotions?

Inspire

Social Engagement

What are innovative ways of collaboration, participation, and engagement offered by web communities? What inspired users to engage themselves for society, for other individuals, or for a specific topic? Does enhanced usability allow for more and effective social engagement?

What we are looking for

We are looking for skilled speakers who rely on usability, UX or interaction design in their profession to submit a talk proposal for the upcoming event. Whether you address newcomers or experts with your contribution is your decision. We are looking for:

  • Contributions that trigger light bulb moments, real insights
  • Practitioner know how and experience, instead of stodgy science
  • Informative subjects instead of commercial talks
  • Vivid sessions, including animations and audience involvement

What we offer

  • The largest German WUD with over 500 field related participants
  • An interested audience and top locations in the center of Berlin
  • Networking in a relaxed atmosphere
  • Attractive sponsoring packages
  • Publication of your abstract, your picture with a short CV and links on our website
  • Videostream of all contributions as well as video archives after the event
  • Participation in the largest usability event worldwide

Publication

Our program will be published including an abstract of your contribution, your picture, a short CV, and links. In case of acceptance, please provide us with these information and the approval for publication on our website as well as for press releases until October 01st 2014. After the event a video of your talk will be published - assuming your approval, if you do not notify us otherwise.

Your Submission

We are seeking high-quality session proposals including a title, the type of contribution, and indication on the distinctiveness of the contribution.

The contributions can have either one of these types: a talk of 20 min. length ( + 10 min. discussion), a workshop of 90 min. length, or a short talk of 10 min. length ( + 5 min. discussion) in the teaser track.

The teaser track allows the presentation of new concepts, opinions and assumptions deviating from the mainstream. Submissions about research projects, master or bachelor theses, and studies of all kind are also welcome. Providing that the contribution provides new ideas, alternative approaches, or invokes lively discussions.

Types of contributions:

  • Talk: 20 min. talk + 10 min. discussion
  • Workshop: 90 min.
  • Teaser Track: 10 min. short talk + 5 min. discussion

You can specify in the application form whether your contribution is for newcomers or experts. Our program committee considers all submissions. Qualitative aspects are as relevant as the relation to usability/UX and this year’s theme “Engaging the User”. The shortlist will be notified by September 26th 2014.
